According to the current research monitor Energy Transition of the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW), photovoltaics is the undisputed growth driver of the German energy transition. The data shows a significant disparity between PV expansion and the expansion of other renewable technologies.

For electrical trade businesses, this means increasing order volumes in the solar sector, while maintenance and expansion work on wind turbines or biomass plants is growing less dynamically. The concentration of skilled workers on PV installation and grid connection simultaneously exacerbates the shortage of skilled workers in other sectors.

From a market perspective, it remains unclear whether PV growth will be system-compatible in the long term: control power, grid stability and storage capacity could become bottlenecks. Electrical installers should keep track of the development of grid connection guidelines and connection subsidies at the Federal Network Agency and regional grid operators.
