Zigbee is a widely adopted wireless protocol in the smart home sector, particularly suited for battery-powered sensors, switches, and actuators. Operating in the 2.4 GHz band with data rates up to 250 kbit/s, it is characterised by extremely low energy consumption, enabling battery lifetimes of several years. The mesh topology allows mains-powered devices to function as routers, extending network coverage. Typical applications include lighting control, blind and shutter management, temperature sensing, and door or window contact sensors. Devices from different manufacturers are largely interoperable through the Zigbee Alliance certification programme. The technology also forms the foundation for the newer Matter standard used across smart home ecosystems.
