Boiler Upgrade Scheme 2026 (GB)
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides upfront grants to homeowners in England and Wales replacing fossil fuel heating with low-carbon alternatives such as heat pumps. Administered by Ofgem, the scheme supports the UK's net zero targets and reduces barriers to clean heating adoption.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government-funded grant programme administered by Ofgem on behalf of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). It was introduced to accelerate the transition away from gas and oil boilers by offering significant upfront financial incentives to property owners who install low-carbon heating systems. The scheme is a central pillar of the UK's strategy to decarbonise home heating and remains active and well-funded through to at least March 2028.
Eligibility is open to homeowners and small business owners in England and Wales whose properties have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation. The property must be replacing an existing fossil fuel heating system, and the new installation must be carried out by an MCS-certified installer. Social housing and new-build properties are generally excluded. Northern Ireland and Scotland operate separate schemes.
As of 2026, the grant values are £7,500 for air source heat pumps (ASHP), £7,500 for ground source heat pumps (GSHP), and £5,000 for biomass boilers in rural areas not connected to the gas grid. The grant is paid directly to the registered installer, who deducts the amount from the customer's invoice, meaning the homeowner never needs to handle the funds directly. There is a limit of one grant per property address.
To participate, MCS-certified electrical and heating contractors must register with Ofgem's BUS portal. After completing an eligible installation, the installer submits an application including commissioning documentation, MCS certificates, and a copy of the property's EPC. Ofgem processes claims and pays the installer within 30 working days. Homeowners should obtain multiple quotes and confirm their installer is actively registered under the scheme before committing.
